How much does it cost to become an insurance agent in Canada?

To become a Licenced Life Insurance Agent in Canada, you need to complete the following steps.

Certification

The first step is to enroll in the Life Licence Qualification Program (LLQP) offered by approved education providers such as Learnedly. Our most popular courses, “LLQP Full Life (Canada)” and “LLQP Full Life (Common Law)” cost $300 each INCLUSIVE of all taxes.

We have priced our courses at a lower price compared to other providers as part of our mission to make financial education more accessible for all Canadians.

Provincial Exams

The next step after completing the certification course is to pass the provincial licensing exams within 1 year of passing the Learnedly LLQP course. The number of provincial exams depends on the course you select, and these maybe completed in-person or online depending on the province administering them.

Some provinces administer the exams themselves whereas others work with Durham College to administer it. Online exam fees per module (tax exempt) through Durham College is $66.

For more information about the provincial exams, you can also check out our “Guide to LLQP Provincial Licensing Exams”

Sponsorship and Licensing

A life insurance company hiring/sponsoring you is the next step in the licensing process. The insurer is responsible for assessing if you meet all the requirements and are eligible for a license. Some employers tend to cover the fees involved in the sponsorship and licensing stage.
